Why I’m Leaving NYC, and Why Montreal Feels Like the Right Move

Skiy line of Montreal

Lately, I’ve been feeling the need for a change. As much as I’ve learned and grown in New York City, it’s time to explore something new, and out of all the places I could land, Montreal keeps rising to the top. Here’s why:

1. A Built-In Support System

I already have a few friends in Montreal more than in most other cities. That means I’ll have a small support network from the start, whether it’s for emotional backup or just someone to cat-sit when I travel.

2. Lower Cost of Living

Montreal is dramatically more affordable than NYC. According to MoveBuddha, rent can be 70%–80% cheaper. That kind of savings opens up a lot more breathing room in my budget and my life.

3. A Move That Won’t Break the Bank

With around 200 books in my personal library, moving costs matter. Fortunately, a move from NYC to Montreal is doable for about $1,000 with a U-Haul or movers. The distance also makes it realistic to split the move into two trips—one to prep the space and bring essentials, and another for the rest of my things (and the cats).

4. Education and Career Opportunities

Canada is expanding job opportunities in accessibility—a field I’m passionate about. Montreal is home to two English-speaking universities, and I’m planning to go back to school to build a long-term future there. Learning French will be key, and there’s no better place to immerse myself than Montreal.

5. Reliable Public Transit

I don’t own a car—and don’t plan to anytime soon. Luckily, Montreal has a solid public transit system with subways and buses that make getting around easy and affordable.

A Fresh Start with Purpose

This isn’t just about leaving NYC—it’s about stepping into something that fits my goals. I’m focused on getting into school, building a new career, and learning French. Life’s been throwing a lot at me lately, but instead of just waiting for the next blow, I’m choosing to reset somewhere that offers hope, structure, and room to grow.

Montreal feels like the right place to begin again.

Hey!

I’m Ana Bronx-based, tea-loving, and currently outnumbered by two cats. There’s Sebastian, a spirited 1.5-year-old I recently adopted (he came with a “behavior warning” of three strikes and two lightning bolts, but honestly? He’s just wildly playful). Then there’s Melmoth, my 3.5-year-old who used to be the solo whirlwind until his new little brother showed up.
